Greenfield and brownfield projects: a supplier guide

Understand how greenfield projects and brownfield expansions differ, what each can mean for suppliers, and which project details need verification.

Different starting points, different supplier questions

A greenfield project starts a new development on a site without the existing facility being expanded. A brownfield project involves an existing site or facility, such as an expansion, modification or redevelopment. The exact use of these terms can vary by source, so read the project scope.

Neither label establishes current activity, an approved investment or an unawarded supply contract. Both describe a starting point, not a sales qualification.

Do not equate a new footprint with an expansion

A new building near a factory might be storage, a replacement structure or a different company’s activity. Even a confirmed expansion does not reveal who will supply equipment or whether purchasing has finished.

A responsible project record should identify the interpretation, its evidence and the unresolved question. Physical observations may eventually help prioritise checks; they cannot replace project identity and scope verification.

Use precise sources and dates

Industrial project providers such as New Projects Tracker distinguish greenfield, brownfield and expansion records. Public agency and promoter documents remain useful references for the underlying scope. Cross-check the current project rather than treating a category label as evidence.
